December 7, 2011 - Seventy Years Later

It's been 70 years since Pearl Harbor was bombed.  70 years.  I wonder what Tate will learn in school about this event that launched us into World War II.   Though I didn't see much of the news today what I did see online didn't make much mention of this sad anniversary.  (Much ado was made by Fox News by the fact that President Obama's daughters' school served Asian cuisine for lunch and what a travesty that was in the eyes of some ultra-conservative, hateful Americans)

For reasons I can't quite explain myself this day, December 7, has always weighed heavily on my heart.  When I see pictures or videos of those men, those boys,  my heart just aches.  I took Lindsey to Hawaii in 2005 when she graduated from college, and we visited Pearl Harbor on Memorial Day.  That was a beautiful, moving experience.  Standing on that memorial looking down into that water upon the Arizona is a memory etched on my heart forever.

In the aftermath that is 9/11 and with the simple passage of time I believe that this tragedy at Pearl Harbor is being forgotten.  And certainly with time it can be expected to be fade a bit as we have healed and we are moving on.  But it's a huge part of who we are in this country.  And I truly believe hindsight is 20/20.  So, I'll see what Tate's history books have in the offerings in the teachings of WWII and Pearl Harbor.  And if I'm not satisfied, then he'll just have to deal with his boring old mama teaching him from her old, back-in-the-day books.

And speaking of books...this is the 7th day of Advent.  He's having a great time.  I know he doesn't quite get what we are counting down towards, but I know he will someday.  For now, his anticipation of his picture and his book will suffice as I anticipate the celebration  of the birth of Christ.
