The last day of Twenty-Ten

As I bathed Tate tonight, this last day of 2010, I was in awe of how much my baby has grown in the past 365 days.  He walks, talks (well a little bit!), runs, squeals in delight, laughs full on belly laughs, hugs me...the most bestest feeling in the world, has opinions and tantrums, follows directions, knows what he wants, loves cars and airplanes, plays, chases the cat, loves Christmas tree lights and his new Christmas train.  He's still pretty serious, but once he's warmed up to you, he'll giggle like no other.

He's my sweet, sweet boy.  My son.  All mine and mine alone.  And I get to spend another year with the honor of being his mommy.  Most times I cannot believe he's here and that he's mine.  I do acknowledge that he's not really 'mine,' but I have been given the privilege of raising him by our Father.  There are times I cannot believe he was once even more a part of me, growing inside me....what an honor that was!

This sweet boy of mine has had a difficult end to 2010.  Yesterday, my parents were watching him while I worked.  My mom called me around 1pm to tell me Tate had woken from his nap screaming and his eyes were swelling shut.  My parents were beside themselves, and asked me to meet them at the ER.  I raced from work, however I just knew they had to be exaggerating.  Once I got to the ER I realized very quickly they were not.  My poor baby was having yet another idiopathic allergic reaction.

I was horrified.  I felt just awful for him.  My poor parents;  I have never seen my dad so worried and my mom was beside herself.  And Tate.  He was so sad.  We were hustled to the back once I arrived.  He got an injection of epinephrine and decadron (a steroid).  My parents were also with it and gave him a dose of benadryl before they left their house!  We will be off to the allergist next week for another evaluation.  This is the second time he's had a reaction to something unknown.  I hate this not knowing.  It could be anything and as such anything and everything is fair game.  And that's the scariest thing!  How can I protect him if I don't know what I'm protecting him from.  And that's my most important job...protector.  Mother bear!  Noone and nothing is supposed to hurt my baby if I can help it.  I feel helpless and that has to be the worst feeling in the world.

However, I have to have faith.  I know we will figure this out.  God is going to protect my sweet boy.  As we leave 2010 I am so blessed.  Tate has brought me so much joy.  I can't think of anywhere I would rather be than with him.  My wish for 2011 and every other year to come is to remember to just stop and enjoy the moments.  Each and every one of them.  To just sit, be still and enjoy what I have.  And what I have is what I have always wanted most in the world...my baby, my child, my gift from God.

Christmas Day!

Sadly, I must return to work tomorrow for 3 days.  As a pediatric dentist, I'm supposed to relish in the children being off from school, hence their parents want to drag them in to have their teeth drilled and filled.  I don't know who wants to be there less...me or them.

Tate will be with my parents, even though his daycare is open, less than half of the normal attendees are going to be there.  Last week he was one of only two kids in his class (normally there are five).  And in the evenings when I went to get him he was one of only like 7 kids left, and the rest were all older than him.  The teachers are great and keep him safe, so I certainly don't worry about that, but I just don't want him to feel out of sorts.  Who knows?  He probably misses being there and will probably have a hard time adjusting next week when he returns.  Again though, I'm probably projecting like all parents do with their guilt!

So on to the good stuff!!  Tate had a festive Christmas!!  We woke up around 6am, well ok his normal time of 530, and I make him lay in bed with me until at least 6!   Changed him and read him a book about the birth of Jesus really quickly.  I then took him up to go to look at the tree (we were at my parents'), and he ran in, sat down, pointed to the tree to have the lights come on and then scampered up to go eat breakfast.  He didn't notice his train, stuffed animal, remote control car or legos!  None of it!!  All he could think of were his banana, cheerios and plain Greek yogurt.  :)  He then climbed into bed with my parents (had to walk past the tree to get to their room!!).  By 7 though everyone was up including Aunt Lindsey!  Santa brought Tate a Fisher Price Geo-Traxx train, some legos, some books, a Hape car and a Melissa and Doug sort and stack set.  When we get home to our house I'm betting Santa will have left Tate a personalized Land of Nod chair :)

The train was a huge huge hit!

LOVING his train!

LEGOS!
Tate really wasn't into unwrapping presents, playing with the wrapping paper or empty boxes or anything about the whole gift thing.  I don't even think he was overwhelmed...he was just indifferent :)  Such a funny little guy!!

But we had some festive firsts these past four days!!  Tooth #L popped through on Christmas Day!  Tate will say 'ho, ho, ho!' and he even said Jesus!!!  That made my Christmas!!  I gave him a Little People Nativity Set for his 17 month birthday (yes yes yes I still celebrate on the 23rd of each month!!).  He loves it!!  I continuously talked about the Baby Jesus, and now he will go look for it and call it Jesus (now, not consistently, but enough for me to know he knows which one He is).

Actually, Tate has made some great strides in the past month.  He still doesn't have alot of very clear words, but he is finally saying Mama with more regularity and sometimes even in regard to me!!!!   He says 'up' to be picked up.  He climbs into his highchair...all the way and pulls down the tray...I'm sure I shouldn't let him do this!!  He will put his pacifier and lovey in the crib after nap and night sleep time.  He will point to his toes when I say toes, and he loves to put on shoes.   He knocks on doors with those cute little hands to be let in!!  He's signing please really well; he has also signed mommy.  :) :) He will also play by himself for about 10 minutes at a time which allows me to get some things done!  He'll usually come running to wherever I am and throw his little arms around my legs to make sure I'm still there then go back to what he was doing.   He's sleeping so much better as well.  He naps great at daycare (2 - 2 1/2 hours) and ok at home (about 90 minutes) and is finally sleeping through the night most nights (7p-4a, into my bed usually til 515/530)  I have tried a later bedtime between 730/8 which has him up at 430 ready to go and then cranky as all get out the rest of the day!  So I stick to the 7p bedtime (earlier on weekends, 630 or so, when he takes the short naps)  But I'm getting so much more rest these days!  I've also started just napping with him on the weekends sometimes...sooo worth it!!

I can't begin to really acknowledge all the ways that Tate has grown since Christmas last year.  So, I'll let a couple of pictures remind me.

Last year he was my five month old little baby...soft, cuddly, warm and soooo sweet.

This year at 17 months, he is still my baby, still soft, cuddly, warm and soooo sweet.  He's also so funny, full of belly laughs, runs up to hug me all the time and still makes my heart melt.
Merry CHRISTmas!

Christmas 2010

Tate's second Christmas!!   We've been going to the Awesome Worship Service at our church, St. John the Divine, and he does so well.  It's a total kid geared service with great music and Tate can make as much noise as he wants!  I really wanted him to experience the season of Advent.  It wasn't quite the traditional service that I love, but it was special.

We put the Christmas tree up the Friday after Thanksgiving (well Christian and I did), and for a couple of weeks Tate didn't even seem to notice it.  Then, he noticed the lights twinkling away one night when we got home from work/daycare.  The next morning as soon as we came downstairs he ran over to the tree, looked up at it and pointed and said 'Yights!' He then sat down and waited for me to turn them on.  To watch his beautiful face light up (no pun intended!) as he watched the tree glow just melted my heart.  He would sit down each time as he patiently waited for me and it was just precious.  His absolute belief that the tree would light up each and every time just takes my breath away.  Each time I sit down with him and look up at the tree as well and think about my amazement that this little boy is my son.  I look over at him, and I'm so proud of him and of myself.  It's been such a glorious 17 months, no actually Tate and I have been together since October 24, 2008, so 26 months of life together.  I am so very blessed.

Our First Trip to the ER (aka a Single Mom's Anguish)

Never have I been so aware of my singleness while raising this precious boy of mine than today.  It's an amazing, awesome, overwhelming, mind-boggling notion knowing you are completely and totally responsible for the life of another human being.  And then that human being is the one person you love most in the world.  My arms aren't big enough to protect my little boy from all the horrors of this world, and they certainly feel exceedingly short this evening.

Last night when I picked Tate up from daycare he had a small red welt on the bridge of his nose (about the diameter of a dime).  The assistant director said she had noticed as had his teacher, but Tate had not had any sort of accident as far as anyone knew.  He certainly had not cried during the day or acted like he had hurt himself.  But this is a child (at 14 months of age) who once when bitten by another child, calmly walked to the teacher who was trying to intervene and showed her his arm.  In any event, I wondered if he had fallen and hit his face and had broken his nose.  I mean he's 16 months old...he trips over those cute little feet all the time, and he is a HUGE climber!  He is fearless on the playground (while loving having me ride down the slide with him!).  I figured he would be black and blue under his eye(s) this morning if he did indeed have a broken nose.

I put him to bed last night, and he fussed a bit not wanting to go down in his crib alone, so I let him fall asleep in my bed and stay there (bed rails up!!)  He was up and down all night searching for his pacifier, but it never dawned on me he might be uncomfortable.  I had made the conscious decision to NOT give him any Ibuprofen at bedtime last night because I didn't want to mask any swelling etc.  Well this morning I woke up and my baby looked like this!!

I felt terrible for him and decided he must have broken his nose.  I took him to the ER up the street figuring my pediatrician's office would send me to the ER for a possible broken nose.  The staff at the ER (one of those street front places) was just awesome.  It was an actual emergency room type place as the lovely lady explained to me when I came in.  I did not know there is a difference between a street front ER and Urgent Care.  So here's a PSA in case you didn't either...street front ERs will have physicians on the premises and operate in the same manner as your hospital ERs.  Urgent care centers are usually staffed by physician's assistants, nurses and the such.  Urgent care centers are cheaper as well.  I was more than pleased to realize we were at an actual ER because I wanted my 16 month old to see an actual physician.

In any event, we were triaged and in our room within 5 minutes.   Upon examination, the nurse said she didn't feel any real break (and I hadn't the night before either, but hey I'm not a doctor!)  When she then said I think it might be some sort of infection, my heart sank.  I just knew that couldn't be good as this redness is covering his nose and has spread to his left eye slightly.  All I could think was...this is so close to his brain.  But no tears yet;  Tate was less than thrilled by this whole process thus far, so smiley Mommy I was.  We went off to take x-rays.  Thankfully, nothing was broken.

On the other hand, we now have an infection to deal with.  As always with Tate, it's idiopathic.  Was he bit by something that allowed some bacteria to get in, did he get some sort of little cut.  We know it was something of that sort...that's how staph works.  We all have staph on our skin all the time, it's just that when it has an opportunity it can be harsh.  And this is on my antibiotic resistant son.  As I sat there with the very nice ER physician with Tate screaming and crying for no good reason, not wanting his pacifier or his hippo or puffs or anything he normally craves, I couldn't hear her or get the gist of all she was saying.  I almost lost it in my despair because had I had a partner there with me he could have held Tate for me, or I could have held Tate while he got the information.  The doc was lovely and suggested we walk around to distract Tate and we talked, and that helped immensely.  But for those brief seconds, I so wished for someone else to please please help me.  So the big thing we're worried about is MRSA.  Ugh...my poor poor baby.  Tate got an injection of Rocephin and we got a script called in for Bactrim which is the first line of defense against MRSA.  We then saw our ped, so she could see him and we have to follow up in the morning to see if he's getting better.  If he is not we will be sent to the hospital for admittance and IV antibiotics.

As always, Tate is his happy easy-going playful self.  He's been pumped full of meds today...2 antibiotics, 2 doses of benadryl (ped really thinks it's from a small insect bite and boom the staph got in!) 2 doses of ibuprofen and his normal Singular.  Thank goodness Tate LOVES taking medicine!!  Loves it!!  But he is so happy and cuddly.  We went to the playground and I just melt when we get up to the extremely high slide (it gives me the heebie jeebies to look down, and he climbs up to it himself!).  He turns to me and waits for me to get situated and he grabs my hands and puts them around him and down we go together.  When we get to the bottom he claps his hands and burrows into me.  Such unabashed love and enjoyment of life just make my life the happiest I've ever been.

Tonight as we sat under the lit Christmas tree with Christmas music in the background in the darkening night Tate was just beautiful as the light hit his eyes.  He touches the ornaments with a little care :) or points to the tree.  I'm again overwhelmed with all that he brings to my life.  In those moments sometimes I'm sad to not have someone here to share this love with.  And there are days like today when just having someone here to catch me at the end of the day would be so so nice.  And then there's just the unabashed festive joy of watching your son light up because of you.  How I would love to share that happines with someone!

It makes me ponder my relationship my Lord.  How many times do I turn to Him with my joy?  And how many times do I turn to Him with my sadness, hurt or worry?  I need to remember to share my joy with Him every single day.  And I know that He will then carry my hurt, worry and sadness and I most likely won't even have to think of them.

My prayer tonight is one of healing for Tate, but mostly gratitude for the blessing of my life with Tate.

Yes, Tate, There is a Santa Claus, and another, and another...

I am such a mommy.  Just ask my little boy.  As of today, December 5, 2010 he has seen 3 Santas!!  :)  In 3 different Christmas outfits.  And we have more Christmas pajamas than there are days in December (well that's an exaggeration, but he's so cute in all of them)

I'm really blessed to have such a laid back baby.   He has been amazing and not shed one tear.  Now, I'm not getting huge smiles out of him, but he's obviously taking it all in, trying to figure it out.  I love watching him absorb all that is around him.   So, here is Tate with all his Santa friends...

However, amongst all the Santa Clauses, Christmas trees, Frostys and presents the most important person I want Tate to really 'get' is Jesus Christ.  Today is the second Sunday of Advent, and we ventured to church for the first time in a while.  I was really good about taking him when he was an infant and would sleep through the service.  Once he hit the walking/talking/trying to transition to one nap stage church was quite the challenge.  (I'm so blessed that at his church daycare he goes to chapel every Wednesday!)  We went to the Awesome Service today at our church, St. John the Divine, which is all about the kiddos!!  There was lots of singing, dancing in the aisles and praising.  He did really well.  I am so excited to share this most important part of my life with my son.  I cannot wait for him to join the youth group or the children's choir or the acolytes...all of the beauty that is the celebration of our Lord and Saviour.  I remember growing up how much I loved my youth group and how amazingly close to God I always felt, and I so want that for my Tate.   This is the best Christmas present I can give to my son.

The Green Eyed Monster

I miss being pregnant.  I loved everything about being pregnant...ok almost everything.  I had a rough nine weeks there (week 5-14) where I bled constantly...every single day.  That was awful.  But that's another post for another day!

I miss being pregnant.   I have never felt as sexy or as womanly as I did while I was pregnant.  I felt healthy and truly alive.  I felt like I had found my purpose in life (cliche, but amazingly true).  I loved loved loved my prenatal yoga classes.  As hard as it was to get and stay in downward dog I loved the release and relaxation of my classes.  When I look into the yoga room when I'm at the Center these days I feel such longing and jealousy of those women who get to experience that time in their lives especially if they are first time moms.  I want to vaporize through the wall and be in those moments with them.  I want to know that absolute peace and calm again.

I miss being pregnant.  In that same vein I miss having a newborn.  I certainly don't miss the lack of sleep, but even today I'm sleep deprived as Tate is not a good sleeper. (he has gotten so much better though!!!)  I wish I could go back and get a do-over and do that first month over...doesn't every mom of a singleton wish that?  I want to just revel in the new life I created.  I want to hold Tate, smell him, just feel him in my arms, on my breast.  When I see tiny babies out and about my heart aches to have another or for Tate to just be that age one more time.  I remember people everywhere oohing and aahing over Tate at 2 weeks or 5 weeks or any of those other early weeks and telling me how fast it goes by.  Why do we never listen?  And here I am with my 67 weeker who people still ooh and aah over, but it's so not the same.  That nostalgic look of hope is no longer on faces of most people who see toddlers.

I miss being pregnant.  I want another baby, and I'm so jealous of those who can have two or three or four.  Though I don't think I could handle more than 2 single, married or other.  I want to hold a just born babe who cuddles up with those legs as he was in the womb.  I want that warm, downy skin next to mine.  I want Tate to have a sibling.     Spiritually and emotionally I'm dying for another baby and know I could so do it.  Physically, not so much...I'm 43.  My little eggs are probably not in the best shape.  I'm tired and drained by this time of night.  I don't know if I could do the every 2 1/2 - 3 hours ever again for nights, weeks and months on end.  Financially, I cannot see how I could do it.  Between the college, retirement, savings, fun/splurge money investments it's not possible.  But I want to be pregnant.

I miss being pregnant.  I see pregnant women and I'm jealous.  I want to be them.  I see newborns and I want to have one.  I want them to be mine.  I want that feeling of utter awe at the gift of life.

I miss being pregnant.  God blessed me with my wish to carry my own child.  How can I ask for more.  I felt every single kick, somersault and roll of Tate in my belly.  It was always him and I alone in the middle of the night when he started many a party.   Laying on my back watching my belly roll was extraordinary.  Seeing him move took my breath away.

But you know what...he still takes my breath away.  Tonight when I came home he leaped into my arms with his big toothy grin.  I love his little tushy when he walks.  I love how he still cuddles up to me in the middle of the night..he still curls those legs up right beside me.  There is no place he would rather be than in my arms.  His little body is still warm with my love.  I ooh and aah over him all the time.   I get to see him somersault and turn and jump up and down in person now!  He is still all possibilities and hope.

I miss being pregnant.  But I'm so glad I'm not missing out on the love that is Tate.

Wow!  Tate and I have had an amazing couple of weeks!

Last weekend he was a lion for Halloween.  And he was super cute if I say so myself.  His daycare had their annual fall festival, so I dressed him up and off we went.  Grandmommy came along with us.  We then ventured to the Motherhood Center for their annual party.  He took a great picture and got third place in their costume contest.  Granted it wasn't really a 'contest.'  We just had to have our friends vote for him...there was no real judging LOL!  But third place is respectable!  :)

Trick or Treating with fave neighbor Kristin

My cute little lion!

So, I have determined that once you have kids talking to random other parents is not only easy; it's also expected!  We go to the little playground at Memorial Park at least once a week.  I've been pleasantly surprised by how other parents also say at least hi!  There's always the convo...'ahhh, how old is she/he?'  It's been quite festive.  And last Saturday, Tate and I met a really nice mom and her daughter (just about a month younger than Tate).  I told her about the fall festival at our school that same day, and she showed up!  How cool is that?  We then exchanged phone numbers.  She lives right around the corner, so I'm hoping we can hook up to go to the park more often.

Not so thrilled at the Fall Festival!

That being said, I've always been leery of making friends with other women solely because we have kids.  Well, maybe leery is the wrong word...I guess I just don't quite get the point.  If the only thing we have to talk about is potty training or tantrums, what am I getting out of the relationship?  I've been so blessed to have such an amazing group of girlfriends;  and now most of them have kids or are having them.    It is nice to have people who are at the almost exact same point of motherhood as me, but I am so much more than a mother, though it rarely seems like it.  But were it not for my 'girls' I would lose my mind.  I love our book club, Sunday night dnners and random get togethers.  Sure we talk about our kids, but we also talk about just us!  Our lives, our happinesses, our sadnesses and boys :)  Ahhh, we shall see as this pans out over the years!

Me and my girls!

We are in the throes of full tantrum mode these days.  And most of the time I truly have no idea what has set Tate off.  I haven't taken a toy away, I haven't told him 'no don't touch that';  it's just totally random.  He will simply storm off, and I mean storm off and go to the corner, wall or cabinet and scream.  This will go on for 10-15 minutes...it's ridiculous.  I really don't get it.  Today at Target he was a nightmare, and I just don't know why.  Maybe he didn't want to be there?  Maybe he was hungry?  Or maybe he just wanted to embarrass me.  Who knows.  It was most unpleasant, but at least he is still at the age where I can have him in the cart still, so he can't throw himself out in the middle of the floor.  He just screamed the entire time in the cart.  I had to go in with him screaming as I needed the champagne and OJ for the baby shower I'm throwing with the girls tomorrow!

We had a sort of 15 month check up today.  Tate is 21 lb 13 oz; don't know how tall he is, but he's taller than most kids his age.  He still has a cough that has been lingering for over a month;  the ped thinks it's allergies, and as he's been on Omnicef for almost 2 weeks and not gotten better we're going to go with allergies.  I don't want to do another antibiotic because they are so bad for his little tummy.  He got his HIB vaccination today, and he did not cry at all!!  Not a peep.  I looked up to see when the nurse was going to give the shot, and she was cleaning up the mess.  She had already given it, and Tate had not flinched!!  Such a big boy!!

Always be prepared AKA my little boy scared me!

What a crazy two weeks this has been?!  Where to start?

This past Sunday, I ventured to IKEA for the first time with Tate after his nap.  Now he's had a cough for about 2 1/2 weeks.  I know he has seasonal allergies as diagnosed by our allergist, so I wasn't terribly concerned.  I've been running the cool mist humidifier (and freezing my bum off and my black girl hair is not appreciative either, but I digress) for him every night.  Yes, we share a room!  I also suction his nose when I think he'll only kick me every other second.  In any event, we all know he has a pretty severe egg allergy.  We get into IKEA and he's really starting to cough.  And cough.  And cough.  I try to get him to drink some water...no go.  I give him a mum mum which he devours then resumes his coughing.  He doesn't want to be in the stroller which is totally not like him.  He doesn't want to walk.  He doesn't want to be carried.  Again, pushes away the water.  And still continuing to cough.  We're on the second floor of this ridiculously huge store (I had never been there), and I realize something is really bothering him.  He's getting worse, and I cannot get out of this place fast enough.  I decide to put him on me in my baby carrier, and that seems to calm him a bit, but he's still coughing and now starting to seem to be having difficulty breathing.  We finally get out of that place, and some nice ladies help me get my stroller in the car.  But he's starting to look miserable.  He's constantly coughing and looking disoriented.  I vacillate...do I drive us home or try to calm him down.  I don't have the epi-pen because we weren't going to be eating, so why would I need it!!  Furious with myself, and of course I don't have benadryl with me...who carries benadryl in their purse?  (well me now)  I put him in the carseat and race out of the parking lot.  Tate does not look good.  I keep shaking the carseat to keep him awake.  We finally get home, and I race him upstairs and get some benadryl in him.  He's really struggling to breathe in between the constant coughing.  In addition his eyelids are severely swollen (he's been rubbing them now like crazy and his ears are bright red)  My best friend hears him on the phone when I call to see what her daughter's first asthma attack sounded like, and she said 'not like that, and I don't think he sounds good at all'.  I call Lindsey to please come over and ride with me to the ER because I don't want him in the back seat alone where his head could loll forward and occlude his airway.  Thankfully she's only about 10 minutes away.  When she gets here thank God he is no longer struggling to catch his breath, and the coughing has subsided.  I'm still not sure if we should go to the ER, so I call the ped on call.  The nurse is awesome and tells me what to do.  We give Tate a bath, saline and suction his nose and monitor him.  She also tells me he'll probably need another dose of benadryl in 5-6 hours as the symptoms may recur.  Sure enough around 930 Tate wakes up and his eyelids are swollen again...not as bad though.   We saw his ped yesterday, and she feels he had some sort of allergic reaction to a food whereas I thought it was something at IKEA with all that furniture and dust.  However whether it is a food or not,  I have no idea what it could be.  He didn't have anything with egg in it, so it's got to be something else.  So, now we have to figure out what it could be and be hyper vigilant about what he eats until we do.  So from now on I'm giving him fresh fruits, veggies and meats.  We're really going to avoid anything not homemade.  Which is going to be interesting seeing how little I like to cook.   As for the cough which was back to his 'normal' cough yesterday, he's being treated for a sinus infection...my ped was less than thrilled he had had the cough for so long.

So, tonight I am so grateful my little boy is doing so much better.  He's his happy little self...playing, running around, bringing me books to read and his cars to push, and constantly asking for 'gurt' (yogurt)  I cannot express how very scared I was this time.  I don't usually panic about much, but this was more than I thought I could handle.  As I was racing home in the car, I was beside myself wishing I had a partner in this child-rearing to hold my hand when I get scared.  I wanted someone else to help me to decide...'do I call an ambulance or do I drive to the ER' 'which ER do I go to' 'you grab his diaper bag, I'll grab the insurance info.'  Never have I felt so alone as an SMC.  Tate only has me to depend on, so next time I'm going to be prepared.  I'm buying a small baby bag or something of the sort and packing it with essentials, and it will be downstairs by the door for in case of a run to the ER.  I'm going to go to the little ER clinic up the street and ask them do they see babies comfortably.  I now will carry 2 epi pens all the time (the ped said I need 2, and I've given another to his daycare as well).  I will determine which is the closest, best choice for a hospital for a child.  And next time I will simply call an ambulance if I feel it is warranted.

Oh and I should have known that shopping someplace cheap like IKEA would be a bad idea.  Now I know!!  Ethan Allen has outfitted my home beautifully...no dust there!  We're going there this weekend!!!

Chicago Marathon! Go Aunt Lindsey Go!!!

Well it's been a whirlwind weekend!  Friday morning, Lindsey, Tate, my parents and I took a 7:25 AM flight to Chicago to watch Lindsey run the Chicago Marathon on Sunday 10-10-10!!  We had a fabulous time.

I wasn't quite sure it was going to be a great time though!  Here's why!

Aunt Lindsey spent the night Thursday night, so we could drive to the airport together.  We finally get into bed after loading the car...bah...the amount of stuff for a 14 month old is staggering.  We would come to be glad I overpacked.

320 am I wake to the sound of Tate gagging, coughing and retching.  My poor baby has thrown up all over himself, his crib and all his little crib friends.  Now, he's had a cold for about a week, with this cough and allergy gunk all in his nose.  Blech.  So I assume he has thrown up because he was coughing so hard.  I throw all the stuff in the wash and run it.  Get the sheet and mattress pad off as well for the laundry(thankfully there are still 2 layers of sheets and waterproof mattress pads underneath!!).  Strip Tate and into the bathtub, most unhappily I should add, he goes.  329am the washing machine is going, Tate is back in bed asleep and I'm off to dreamland as well as we have to wake at 445am.

445 am I'm up, dressing, loading the last bits into Lindsey's car.  Lindsey is moving around downstairs.  I get Tate up and dressed, and we are walking downstairs and I feel his little tummy rumbling.  This cannot be good, but nothing comes up! (I do see him swallow pretty hard...EEWWWWW!!)  But again, don't think much of it.

530 am We're in the car on our way to IAH.  I'm in the backseat with Tate and he's happy as a clam.

6 am Aunt Lindsey drops us off at the airport with ALL of our luggage.  We check in and yay there are Grandmommy and Granddaddy!!  Lindsey gets back to the terminal, and we're off to the gate with more stuff than should be allowed.

7 am I give Tate some breakfast...cheerios, milk and banana.

730 am Tate falls asleep.

750 am We take off for the Windy City

825 am Tate throws up all over himself in his sleep and wakes up beside himself.  Aunt Lindsey is horrified and can barely bring herself to look at him.  So much for all my 'help.'  Tate and I make our way to the teeny tiny airplane potty, change his clothes from head to toe.  He is then a happy camper.  I now realize he has some sort of stomach bug.  I'm praying it's not like the last time he had a stomach virus because then I came down with it 48 hours later, Aunt Lindsey was sick 60 hours later and Grandmommy was sick 72 hours later.

10 am We're at O'Hare.  Lindsey, Tate and I are picked up by our driver and off to downtown we go, while Grandparents get to their far away from everything airport hotel.

11 am We check into the Swisshotel, get situated and off we go to see the city I used to live in! In the meantime I've spoken to the very very nice triage nurse at our pediatrician. We're to buy Pedialyte, give Tate bland bland foods once he's held the Pedialyte down more than 4-5 hours.
1 pmish Tate can't keep the first sips of Pedialyte down...time to change clothes AGAIN. We visit Niketown, Water Tower Place, Legoland and attempt Garrett Popcorn but the line is too long. The grandparents have joined us as well. Lunch was outside at a little bakery in the unseasonably warm, but gorgeous Chicago weather.

225 pm More pediatlyte same result.  But he's a happy boy and in yet ANOTHER outfit.  We decide to start all over with a couple of sips every 30 minutes per Fay's advice as I had given him about 1/2 cup.  This seems to do the trick, however Tate has no food whatsoever on Friday except breakfast.

5 pmish we all head back to the hotel, pick up salad for me for dinner and my parents grab some yummy sandwiches.

630 pm Lindsey leaves to meet a girlfriend out in the city

7 pm Tate is asleep in the pack n play.

The rest of the weekend was just awesome as well.  Saturday morning we all headed off to the Marathon Expo on the Marathon shuttle...a yellow school bus!!  Tate's first time on a school bus...he was not impressed.  He just oohed and awed at everything.  Lindsey and my parents went out to lunch after the expo, and I headed back to the hotel to get Tate down for his nap and to give him a bite of plain yogurt which he kept down!  Yay!!  We napped about 2 1/2 hours...in fact Lindsey and the parental units joined us for about an hour of that nap, so all the Cunninghams were well rested.  Granddaddy stayed at the hotel to watch football, and us girls grabbed the baby and headed off to Navy Pier.  Lindsey and I took Tate on the HUGE ferris wheel then I took him on the Carousel.  It was an early night for all as Lindsey had to be up at 5am to run the MARATHON!!!

5am Sunday came quickly!!  Lindsey was out the door to meet her girlfriend, Kelsie for the race!!  The grandparents arrived around 7am and we swooped Tate out the door after some cheerios and banana (his tummy was doing so much better!!).  He was super excited and we outfitted his stroller with a balloon to cheer Lindsey on!!  We found primo spectator spots in a position about 2 minutes into the race.  You can hear Tate in the second video saying 'woohoo!"  It was an amazing feeling to see all those beautiful runners out there and overwhelming to know my baby sister was out there amongst over 40,000 people running 26.2 miles!!!

We traversed the city to get to great spectator spots to see Lindsey run.  Our timing was a little off, so we didn't see her, but we saw some wonderful, dedicated people.  Those walking and running, old and young, healthy and hurting.  But they were all out there!!!  I met an older gentleman (about 65 to me) whose wife is a 3 year cancer survivor and this was her second marathon!!

Tate and I had to leave to catch our flight at 1115 because sadly I have to work tomorrow, so we didn't get to see Lindsey finish the  marathon or party with her afterwards.  (bah I hate working)  She finished in about 4HR 45MIN.  She had some major trouble with her quads really tightening up and had to stop at the medics about 3-4 times to get some massage to help her out.  I spoke to her tonight, and she sounds like she's really hurting, but she's thrilled she's completed her 1st marathon.  They'll be home tomorrow and she'll be picking Tate up from daycare which he LOVES.

Oh and Tate has had a boom in his vocabulary!!!

He says....

Lindsey, ok it sounds like Dinsey, but it's very obvious he means her.
Vincent, so you have to know he's talking about the cat, but when you do it's pretty clear :)
He said 'bye bye' clear as day to some stranger on the plane on Friday.
cat, car, 'i did it', uh-oh, mama (and means it more these days)

Oh and he loves clapping his hands.  As I rock him at night he'll be laying with his head on my chest half asleep then he'll pop up and clap his hands 3 times or so, grin at me and lay his perfect little head back on my chest!!  LOVE IT!!!

Beachcombers!!

Well, apparently my little guy is a fish!!  He LOVES  the water!  I already knew he loved pools, but didn't know about the beach.  I needn't have been concerned.  We went to Galveston yesterday (yes we went a few weeks ago with Aunt Lindsey, but we didn't go to the ocean, just the lame Moody Gardens Beach).  My dear friend, Susan, rented a beach house with her family and invited for a shrimp boil and all the festivities that entails!  Tate and I took off Saturday morning at 9am...he cooperated and napped the entire way there!!  (we're only about 50-60 minutes from the beach, however Susan's beach house rental was almost to California, so it took another 20 minutes to get to it!).  I took Tate down to the beach along with Susan's 4 and 7 year old to 'just take a walk'...no one was to get wet.  Well Tate took one look at Alex and Katherine skipping in the water and was all over that.  Off came his pants and he was thrilled!!

Later after a second nap and lunch we ventured back to the ocean in the appropriate gear.  Uncle Dan took Tate waaayyy out into the Gulf!!  Tate was in heaven.  My little guy was just laughing and having a fabulous time.  This is probably one of the best parts of being a mom...seeing your child so happy and so excited.  The joy on his face was just priceless!!  And after all the fun, he wanted to just snuggle up with me...it made me reminiscent of those newborn days.  Actually even now, Tate will curl up on me when he's tired and bring those little long legs of his up under himself.  I love that feeling!!

We spent the night at the Hilton Hotel courtesy of my boss!  Our office summer party was this weekend, and she footed the bill for a night out for the entire staff.  It was Tate's first night in a hotel.  Suffice it to say, crazy rock stars trashing hotel rooms have nothing on what a 14 month old can do to a hotel room!!

We went to brunch today at Rita's new house, and Tate fell in love with her dog!!  He was a little skittish at first, but warmed up quickly and followed Maddie all through the house!

We've also had a week of amazing things!!!

Has started calling me Mama off and on!!
Says 'Bye Vincent'
Says car, cat, what sounds like 'I did it'
Loves when singing 'The Wheels on The Bus..' hearing the lyrics 'the baby says waa-waa-waa'...he
cracks up when I sing that verse.
He gives great hugs!!
Loves hugging Vincent!
Tooth #I erupted!!
Allergy season is here :(  he's quite congested!!  As is his mommy!

All in all a great end to September!!!

Ramblin'

I have so much going on in my little head right now I don't know where to start!!  So if this post is all over the place, well that's just how my brain works these days :)

So, Tate surprised me tonight in the bathtub!  We have a little squirty rubber duck, that I fill up with water and squirt him with while saying over and over again the duck says quack.  Last week when we started this he immediately said his version of quack, but would never say duck and certainly didn't seem to put together the duck says quack.  Well, tonight he's in the tub, he grabs the orange duck and says 'quack' then gives it to me and makes the sign for more...my signal to play our little game with the duck and squirt him!!  I asked him what the duck says and he said 'quack'!!  I'm so excited.  I know, it's not a big deal to many people, but to me and my babe it's HUGE!!!

Driving to meet my mom shopping yesterday, I turned on some Alicia Keys and then some Sugarland and Tate just sat in the back seat just dancing and singing....I love this boy!  And when he plays with his fire truck I love hearing him make the wooo-ooo sound with those perfect little lips!!

This weekend, we changed up our sleeping situation!  I transitioned him to one nap here at home yesterday.  He's been taking one nap at daycare since August 23rd...quite successfully apparently.  He sleeps at least 2 hours there and usually 2 1/2 or a little more.  Yesterday he made it to 2 hours here with me laying down with him for the last 45 minutes.  Today he slept 1 hour 45 minutes all on his own...I couldn't get a nap extension out of him, so I went with it after 10 minutes of trying.  If you know Tate and his nap/sleep issues you know this is huge for my little guy!!

Friday night, he put himself to sleep (took about 20 minutes) and this time I didn't go to him when he fussed around 10p, nor did I go sleep in the room in my bed.  I slept on the 2nd floor on the couch...yes I have a room on the 1st floor with 2 perfectly good beds, but I can't bring myself to be that far away from him!!  In any event, he fussed at 10 put himself back to sleep,  fussed again around130 then again around 315 then one last time around 525 with about 5-7 minutes of crying off/on then out until 645!!  Woohoo!!  Last night wasn't as great...down at 650, fussing around 9, 11, 1 something then at 414 he was furious.  I felt like he was really worried about me not being in there, so after 15 minutes of him fussing, then crying a bit I went up and put him in bed with me.  And yet he still wasn't pleasant!!  :)  Into the crib went his little butt, and I sacked out on the bed and didn't hear him again until 6.  Now I just heard him fuss in the crib (956pm), but he went right back to sleep.  So, we're getting there!

Riding the carousel!!!
We went to the zoo today...for the first time.  Well I mean our first time to the Houston Zoo..we went to the Bronx Zoo this summer with my cousin and his family.  As we walked up to the entrance Tate started squealing in delight!  It was hilarious.  The 2 of us had a really nice time!  He was all about petting the goats until we went into the petting zoo...then he held onto me for dear life for a bit...so funny.  He thought the carousel was great for about the first 3-4 minutes of the ride, then he wanted down, but we followed instructions and stayed still until the ride came to a complete stop. :)  All in all, a really nice afternoon complete with elephants, bats, prairie dogs, some nasty spider, goats and cheetahs!  Oh and it as 92 degrees...a veritable cool front for us!
