Mother's Day 2015

Mother's Day.  A day I had hoped to celebrate for me for years and years;  I've so always wanted to be a mom.  This was my 6th Mother's Day!!  Because yes I count that year when I was pregnant...I loved every minute of being pregnant, every.single.minute.  I have never felt so beautiful, complete and connected to another human being...that's how I knew I was meant to be a mother.  I was completely fulfilled once I was pregnant.

This Mother's Day weekend started with the Mother's Day Liturgy at Tate's school.  It was just lovely.  We sat together during the mass and then in the midst of it the boys stood up and sang 'You Are My Sunshine' to their moms.  The one song I've sang to Tate since he was born.  Well I haven't sang it to him at bedtime in about a year and a half, but it was the first song I sang to him when the nurse placed him in my arms in the hospital for the first time.  And I've started singing it to him every night again;  he was shy and embarrassed the first few times, but now I think he's loving it :).  It was sweet to look around and see the 7th and 8th grade boys struggling to be cool, yet wanting to love on their mamas by singing.  I only taped a few stanzas because I wanted to be able to just breathe in my sweet boy.  Oh my though I love Tate's face as he sings, the shyness, the embarrassment, his love...just beautiful!

Then the kindergarten and 1st grade boys sang 'You Are So Beautiful'...tears.  Just gorgeous.

My sweet boy also went up to the stage and got a rose for me...Love him so much!

After some snacks he headed off to class, and I went off smelling my rose :)

Saturday we met our good friends for lunch at a lovely restaurant...it has a huge grassy play area outside for kids to play in and run about!  It's one of our most favorite places for lunch!  I just wanted to spend some time with N and R;  it's so important to me that Tate see strong, positive black mothers and to foster these friendships for him!   And our kids have a great time together!

One of the rare times Tate has picked up a bug!
He quickly exchanged the bug for a book!
Which I love!!!
On Sunday, Mother's Day, we went to church to the awesome worship service.  It was a lovely service, and we had a lovely time.  Even better the church gives all the kids a rose to give to their mothers as we leave the worship service!

That afternoon, we went to see another festive kid's play, 'Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing' with our friends S and her son P.  I invited my mom along as well as my sister Kellie and my nephew.  The boys loved the play;  it was really well done and actually quite funny!
My mom, Tate and I came home for dinner which I had prepared that morning.  Lindsey joined us as well.  I had made chicken spaghetti that morning.  Lindsey came to my house while we were still at the play to cook everything and get the table ready.  Even better, she had picked up a card for Tate to sign along with a little gift for him to give me...some scentsy chips for my warmer...yum.
Three of my most favorite people!
It was a beautiful weekend which reminds me in the hectic pace of my life, the stress of all that's going on, more wrong than right these days, the worry and pain that I am truly content.  My life's dream has come true and because of that, all the worry, pain, stress and hecticness of my life is nothing but a blip in my life.

This, this mothering, is what I was meant to do.  I'm so blessed that God deemed me worthy to raise this sweet soul.

Happy 50th Anniversary Mommy and Daddy!! April 24, 1965- April 24, 2015

Saturday night was the dinner party for my parents.  Early last fall, my dad told my sisters and I that he wanted to go back to New York where they got married while we were there for Lindsey to run the marathon and he wanted to go back to Hampton where they first met and dated and see their old haunts.  While in Virginia he and my mom wanted to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with their families, most of whom still live in the Hampton area...my dad's 5 remaining brothers and sisters, my mom's sister (the other lives in New York) and the majority of my and my sister's 1st cousins.

Initially my dad also wanted to go to Washington, D.C. where they went on their honeymoon, but they were unable to do so.  That's why Tate and I ended up in D.C.

So Lindsey and I along with the help of my aunt organized a lovely dinner for them at the Cypress Grille at Embassy Suites in Hampton.  I sent out formal invitations, and the plans were underway.  I also emailed/mailed letters to many of my parents' friends (after absconding with my mom's address book on the sly) and asked them to send letters and/or cards wishing my parents well if they would like.  I wanted to fill a scrapbook with memories and well wishes from those who would not be celebrating with us;  I also asked them to send along photos if they had any.  It turned out to be just lovely...one of the highlights of their evening.  My cousin who is a semi-professional photographer agreed to photograph the evening, and my other cousin arranged for a gorgeous cake.  My aunt did a fantastic job with the menu and organizing the event since Lindsey and I could do so little from so far away.  We will be forever grateful.

In addition to the family guest list I included two couples who were (still are) my parents' best friends when we lived in Baltimore.  These two couples mean more to my parents than any other friends they've had before and since.  One couple lives in St. Louis and was unable to attend, but sent a lovely letter and some pictures from years past.  The other couple resides in Baltimore and were able to attend.  We kept their appearance a secret from my parents.  Best.Surprise.Ever.

I have never seen my parents so very happy.  The smiles on their faces will stay with me for the rest of my life.  Their joy, happiness and contentment to be home and surrounded by those they love so very much will sustain me long after they're gone.  Absolute joy.

Happy 50th Anniversary Mommy and Daddy!

My parents' best friends surprising them...the definitive high of the wonderful evening...

So much love in this room...

I'm including the pictures my cousin, who is a semi-professional photographer, took as a gift to us that night for this blog is more an anthology of my life with Tate in addition to an outlet for me as we travel this journey together.

This was probably one of the best weekends I've had in a really really long time.  And it's all because I was surrounded by these wonderful people.  Miles and miles separate us, but there is just something about the love of family.  I'm so blessed that both of my parents came from individuals who placed such a strong focus on family and the love of God.  It's so important for me that Tate see this, this love of family and God.  I want him to always no that no matter where he is, what he does, who he becomes that we, his family, will always be there for him no matter the passage of time.  My parents have done that for me, my sisters, my aunts and uncles, cousins and distant cousins.  All of them.

Blessed beyond measure.
