Tonight, we disassembled Tate's crib and converted it into a double bed in preparation for his new room. Uncle Bryan and Uncle Mike came over to do the honors for me, much like they had when they put the crib together when I was 8 1/2 months pregnant. While Tate happily enjoyed a rare treat of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on a school night, the crib pieces made their way downstairs with little fanfare. But I knew. I knew in my heart that my baby was no longer a baby.
And I've known that for a while, but as long as that crib stayed in my room full of stuffed animals and blankets I could still pretend I had a baby. Though Tate had not slept in the crib since mid-February I could still run my hand across the crib as I walked to and from the bathroom, seemingly always remembering my 5 day old sound asleep in his crib.

I know I have several more pics in his crib from birth until this one at about 4 months old, but I can't find them. Looking through these pictures just make me wish I had spent so much less time worrying about how much he slept or didn't sleep in this crib and just had enjoyed him so much more. But when he slept, he slept the sleep of the angels.
So sweet even when he wasn't sleeping. He's almost one in this picture...
One of the last pictures I can find of him in the crib. It's a bit after Christmas 2012....
Tonight marks a milestone for me, though not for Tate I'm sure. He happily came downstairs to look at his new bed, but he had no intention of sleeping in it (and I still have a few things to do to get the room ready). He was happy to check it out and run back upstairs before mommy remembered her (a) no school night tv and (b) her rule of not watching more than 20-30 minutes of a tv show! With glasses of wine in our hands we got the bed all set up and ready for Tate.

It's with a strangely heavy heart that I will walk upstairs and climb into my bed with my sweet boy. I'll cuddle him close like I do every night I get in bed and smell his sweet baby boy smell. As we grow nearer to transitioning him to his own room I get surprisingly teary. I love sleeping with my boy. I love having him so close to me. Of the past 4 years, 7 months and 26 days we have slept apart only 5 days. Five days. I know downstairs is not across the street or around the corner or down the road, but it's going to not only be an adjustment for him, it's going to be an adjustment for me.
The bed is up. I'm going to give
Me and my baby.

Big hugs - I have had some simialr sad feelings today as my boy is growing up.
Its a strange mixture really, I love him more each day, and each day he is even more fun and interesting than yesterday, but it is sad to know the baby days are slipping away.
Good luck with the transition
Big milestone mama! What a lovely post about it. Love the crib--I think it's identical to the one I have for Rowan :)
Could he be any cuter? Oh, my gosh--what a darling newborn. And now, a big boy.
Yep, sleeping arrangements. Nothing seemingly so simple, could be more emotional and complicated. At almost 4 1/2, Liam still sleeps downstairs in my bed. He's got his own room, his own bed but zero interest in it. Henry sleeps upstairs in his own bed about 60% of the time. I don't know, I could sweat it, wonder what is developmentally appropriate and lay down strict rules. Or I could just let it be what it is. I'd rather my boys sleep soundly somewhere than be unhappy and awake for hours in their beds. (I'm sure there's many who loudly disagree with me--let's hope they don't read your blog.)
Aw, made me tear up...& Tate's crib looks very much like Elena's crib!! quite popular it seems!
Big milestone! But i have a feeling he won't be sleeping in that bed (alone) for a while... No rush, Mama. Take your time. It will happen when you are both ready. (And you know I don't co-sleep! But if it works for both of you, that's great!)
