Unbeknownst to him, I signed Tate up for a 1K race a few weeks ago. Oh I told him about it of course, but I didn't make a big deal of it. I just told him he'd be running in a race because he's such a fast runner. And fast runner he is. I didn't think much of it last year when at the end of the school year he won an award for running the furthest in PE; I was routinely seeing little progress notes coming home about how far he'd run over the course of the year. This year a couple of times other parents have mentioned how fast he runs just from watching him on the soccer field or out and about. Tate himself has also mentioned on more than one occasion that he used to always come in first during laps in PE, but now Travis is beating him sometimes, but that the two of them are always first and second.
That combined with my own thoughts about his running speed as well as my desire to have him be physically active as much as possible made me decide to sign him up!!
This boy of mine surpassed all my expectations! There were about 100 runners in the Kids' 1K. There was no delineation of ages or sex. Judging from the looks of the kids, I'd say ages ranged from 2 years to 12/14 years of age.
Tate crossed the finish line in about 8th place!! All the kids who crossed before him were much older!!
I was so very proud of him!! So very proud!!
He was so very proud of himself!!
And I think he had alot of fun. He was very nervous before the run started, asking me how he would know where to go and when to turn. I assured him there would be teachers on the course who would help him and that he wouldn't get lost. So even with all his nervousness and anxiety, not about the race, but the logistics of it...not wanting to get lost...he did great!!
I'm ready to sign him (and maybe us) for more races!!
Goodness I love this boy!
